Albert George Stevens was a founding member of the renowned Staithes Art Club (founded in 1901) based around Whitby. He was born in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire where his father was a doctor. Albert George Stevens studied at the Academy in Antwerp after the death of his father and tended to paint mostly in watercolour. His style was impressionistic, his subject matter mostly Yorkshire landscapes in which he sometimes captured the local children playing, the farmer leading his sheep, interiors with ladies taking tea or flower arranging or more domestic chores such as milking time. Stevens exhibited extensively at the Royal Academy, the Walker Gallery Liverpool, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and the Yorkshire Union of Artists.

The present painting "A view of Whitby" is an attractive atmospheric watercolour measuring 12"x 15". It is signed lower left and is mounted and framed giving an overall size of 24"x 27".
