William Greaves (1852-1938) was born in Leeds and studied at Sheffield College of Art. He travelled and exhibited widely at galleries including the Royal Academy, Royal Cambrian Academy, Manchester and Liverpool. He worked mostly in oils and his subjects include landscapes in and around Wharfedale in Yorkshire and Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire. The present painting "Nun Monkton Church, near York" is a watercolour measuring 10"x 15". It is signed lower right and is dated 1930. The painting measures 10"x 15" and is mounted and framed giving an overall size of 19"x 24".
