John Dobby Walker (1863-1925) was a watercolour painter born in Bradford who started his working career as a coach trimmer and painter at Sheethams, a local coach building firm. He studied painting at the Bradford Church Institute and, following a spell as an art teacher, devoted his time to painting, mainly landscape views. He painted mostly around his home in the West Riding but also travelled and exhibited widely both throughout the U.K. and on the continent. His work is now held in good private collections and also in Public Art Galleries. The present watercolour is a very good example with family provenance. It measures 11"x 14" and is signed lower right and inscribed with the title "Barnack" lower left. It is mounted and framed giving an overall size of 19"x 23".
