Frederick 'Fred' Stead was born in Shipley, Yorkshire in August 1863. He studied initially at the Shipley School of Art before being awarded a scholarship to The Royal Cambrian Academy. Stead became the Chairman of the Society of Yorkshire Artists.His work shows a love of his native Yorkshire and he exhibited regularly at The Royal Academy in London and other galleries around the UK. The present painting "The Market" is a watercolour measuring 9"x 13" and is signed lower left. It is mounted and framed in an oak frame giving an overall size of 16"x 20".
