William Greaves (1852-1938) was born in Leeds and studied at Sheffield College of Art. He travelled and exhibited widely at galleries including the Royal Academy, Royal Cambrian Academy, Manchester and Liverpool. He worked mostly in oils and his subjects include landscapes in and around Wharfedale in Yorkshire and Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire.
The present painting is an oil on board measuring 6"x 9". It is framed in a quality gilt swept frame giving an overall size of 13"x 15". It has a nice old inscription on the back in the artist's hand: "Farm and Wheel, Endcliffe Wood nr. Sheffield, sketch on the spot, William Greaves, June 1975".
