Born in Bradford, Yorkshire in 1868, Rigg studied at Bradford College of Art then at the renowned Académie Julian in Paris. His attractive open air scenes were in the manner of French late nineteenth century painting. He exhibited at RA, RBA, Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and elsewhere, working in many parts of England. He was a prominent member of the Staithes Group and later lived for a time in Letchworth, Hertfordshire.

"Gunnerside, The Close of Day" Swaledale, Yorkshire, is an oil painting on panel, signed lower left. It shows a view in Swaledale, Yorkshire, close to the artist's home, in an atmospheric evening light. It is framed in a period gilt frame giving an overall size of 15"x 18".
