William Greaves (1852-1938) was born in Leeds and studied at Sheffield College of Art. He travelled and exhibited widely at galleries including the Royal Academy, Royal Cambrian Academy, Manchester and Liverpool. He worked mostly in oils and his subjects include landscapes in and around Wharfedale in Yorkshire and Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire. The present painting is an oil painting on panel measuring 12"x 17". It is signed lower right and is dated (19)16. It is inscribed on the reverse with the title "Haytime, East Keswick" in the artist's hand. It is in a hand made gilt frame giving an overall size of 18"x 24".
