Vivian Bewick (1912-1999) was a tutor at the Buckhurst Hill Community Association (BHCA). He was a descendant of Thomas Bewick, the famous 19th century artist and engraver of birds and animals. In 1952 Vivian Bewick and a group of his students designed and painted a series of murals in Bedford House. Some are long gone but those above the main staircase showing in a delightfully naive style, the local area and its history, have survived. In 1992 Essex Council financed their restoration and the newly renovated murals were unveiled in the presence of the now elderly but delighted artist himself.
Bewick exhibited at the R.A., the Paris Salon, Royal Institute and the R.B.A.
The present painting "Storm at Midnight, Richmond Castle" Yorkshire, is an atmospheric oil on board measuring 20"x 24". It is signed lower left "Bewick" and is inscribed on the reverse with the title. It is framed in a fine quality frame finished in gold leaf giving an overall size of 27"x 31".
A lovely atmospheric oil painting of Richmond in Yorkshire.
