Rudolf Helmut Sauter (1895-1977) was a painter, printmaker, illustrator and poet and son of the artist George Sauter. He was educated at Harrow, studying art in London and Munich, his father having come from Bavaria. He also illustrated a definitive edition of works by his uncle John Galsworthy. Sauter exhibited at the R.A., the Royal Institute, the Pastel Society and at the Paris Salon. The present painting is an oil on board measuring 9"x 13". It is signed and on the reverse is the inscription "Sussex Quarries (View from the house of the late John Galsworthy O.M.). It is dated 1929 and is framed in a hand made gilt frame giving on overall size of 14"x 18".
