William Greaves (1852-1938) was born in Leeds and studied at Sheffield College of Art. He travelled and exhibited widely at galleries including the Royal Academy, Royal Cambrian Academy, Manchester and Liverpool. He worked mostly in oils and his subjects include landscapes in and around Wharfedale in Yorkshire and Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire.

"When Frost was Spectre Grey" is an attractive little Winter landscape close to the artist's home in East Keswick in Yorkshire. The painting is unsigned and is framed in a quality gilt frame giving an overall size of 14"x 18".
