William Greaves (1852-1938) was born in Leeds and studied at Sheffield College of Art. He travelled and exhibited widely at galleries including the Royal Academy, Royal Cambrian Academy, Manchester and Liverpool. He worked mostly in oils and his subjects include landscapes in and around Wharfedale in Yorkshire and Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire.

"Farmstead, Quaker Lane, Asquith" (Askwith) is a good example of his work. An oil on board measuring 10"x 14" it is signed lower right and is framed in a fine quality gilt frame giving an overall size of 16"x 20". It is an interesting painting historically, showing a busy farmstead at Askwith near Otley in Wharfedale, Yorkshire, a view from about 100 years ago.
