Richard Henry Brock (1871-1943) was born in Colney Hatch, London, and moved with his family to Cambridge a few years later where his father was a reader with the Cambridge University Press. He shared a studio with his brothers who illustrated books, whereas Richard initially concentrated on landscape painting, later illustrating books and magazines including "Tracked on the Trail" by Nancy M. Haynes (1926), "Another Pair of Shoes" by Jessie Leckie Herbertson (1929) and "The Windmill Guides" by Violet M. Methley. Novels illustrated by Brock include editions of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" by Harriet Beecher Stowe and "The Pilgrim's Progress" by John Bunyan (1924).

"The Rising Moon" is an exceptional example. An oil painting on canvas measuring 22"x 36", is in signed lower right and dated 1902. It is in the good original gilt frame giving an overall size of 31"x 46". On the back is a nice old label with the title and name and address of the painter.
