James Robert Granville Exley (1878–1967) was a painter and etcher of birds (particularly poultry), figures, and portraits. He was born in Bradford, and educated at Bradford Grammar School. After studying at Skipton Art School and Royal College of Art James worked for some time in Paris and first exhibited in 1906. He was Principal of the Cambridge and County School of Art 1909-12, and then Head of Hull School of Art 1912-19. He exhibited work at the Royal Academy, Glasgow Institute, Connell & Sons Gallery, London, the Redfern Gallery, London, and for the Royal Society of Painter Etchers and Engravers, of which he was elected an Associate Member in 1923.
