James Watson (1851-1936) was a landscape and figure painter in oil and watercolour and art teacher at Newcastle Grammar School until 1919. Born in Newcastle he later attended South Kensington School of Art and was a regular exhibitor with the Bewick Club, Newcastle. He exhibited widely including at the Royal Academy and other Public and private Art Galleries and was a member of the Staithes Group of Artists. "The Hayrick" is a charming little oil painting on panel by Watson. It measures 7"x 11" and is signed lower left. It is nicely framed in a hand made gilt frame giving an overall size of 12"x 16". On the reverse is a nice old label for R. Scupham & Sons, Middlesbrough.
