Lester Sutcliffe (1848-1933) was born in Heptonstall, Halifax. He was a painter of both coastal scenes and landscapes in oil and watercolour and often painted the Yorkshire coast in and around Whitby where he lived for many years. His work is held in many private and public collections and he exhibited widely including at the R.A., Liverpool, Manchester and the Royal Institute. The present painting is an oil on canvas measuring 16"x 24". It is signed lower right and is in an old gilt swept frame giving an overall size of 24"x 32". There is a label on the reverse describing the location of the view in the painting.
