“Early Spring, Bolton Abbey from the River”

William Greaves (1852-1938) was born in Leeds and studied at Sheffield College of Art. He travelled and exhibited widely at galleries including the Royal Academy, Royal Cambrian Academy, Manchester and Liverpool. He worked mostly in oils and his subjects include landscapes in and around Wharfedale in Yorkshire and Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire. The present painting shows a view in Spring of Bolton Abbey from the river Wharfe. It is signed lower left and dated (18)80. It is framed in a simple gilt frame giving an overall size of 15"x 12". On the reverse is an original inscription in the artists' hand with the title and artist's name and address in Leeds. A very attractive painting of Bolton Abbey in Wharfedale, Yorkshire.
