Austin Winterbottom (1860-1919) was a painter of landscapes and figure compositions who worked most of his life around the area of his native Sheffield. He drew much of his inspiration from the surrounding countryside and his work exudes a love of the English landscape and the people in it. He is particularly known for his snow scenes and he exhibited his work in the Royal Academy from 1889 and at the Royal Society of British Artists from 1890. As well as being held in many private collections he also exhibited a painting in the Manchester City Art Gallery. The present picture "A Winter's Day" is an oil on canvas and is signed lower right. It is in fine original condition and measures 20"x 24". It is framed in a gilt swept frame giving an overall size of 29"x 33".
